Saxenda vs Wegovy: daily vs weekly, and which loses more

The short answer
Both are Novo Nordisk GLP-1 drugs for weight management, but Saxenda is daily liraglutide and Wegovy is weekly semaglutide. In the head-to-head STEP 8 trial, Wegovy averaged clearly more weight loss (~16% vs ~6%).
Wegovy wins on results and convenience (weekly vs daily). Saxenda's remaining case is its fast washout, its role where semaglutide is not tolerated or available, and generic liraglutide pricing.
The core difference
Saxenda and Wegovy come from the same company and the same drug class, which is why people confuse them, but they are different molecules on different schedules. Saxenda is liraglutide, a daily injection with a roughly 13-hour half-life. Wegovy is semaglutide 2.4 mg, a weekly injection with a 7-day half-life. Daily versus weekly is the difference you feel most day to day; the results difference is what the trials measured.
Which one loses more weight?
This is one of the few comparisons with a direct answer. The STEP 8 trial ran semaglutide 2.4 mg against liraglutide 3 mg head-to-head, and semaglutide won clearly: roughly 16% average weight loss versus about 6% for liraglutide over 68 weeks. Program averages agree, with Wegovy around 15% and Saxenda around 8% in their respective trials.
So on pure weight loss, Wegovy is the stronger drug, and it is also more convenient (one shot a week versus seven). For most people prioritizing results, that combination makes Wegovy the default choice where it is available and affordable.
Where Saxenda still earns its place
- Fast washout: liraglutide's short half-life means it clears in days, useful if you react badly or need to stop quickly for a procedure or pregnancy plan.
- Availability and cost: when Wegovy is out of stock or uncovered, Saxenda can be the accessible option, and generic liraglutide is arriving at lower prices.
- Tolerability route: a daily drug lets some people fine-tune timing to put side effects where they hurt least, and stepping the dose is gradual.
- Better than nothing: an 8% average is still clinically meaningful loss that many people never reach unmedicated.

How to choose
Coverage and access first (they often decide), then results versus routine: if you want maximum loss and can do a weekly shot, Wegovy leads; if daily dosing suits you, or Wegovy is unavailable or unaffordable, or you value the fast washout, Saxenda is a reasonable choice. It is a prescriber conversation, and switching between them is routine.
