Zepbound and breastfeeding: what is known and not known

There is no established safety data for Zepbound while breastfeeding. Zepbound is tirzepatide, and it was not studied in nursing mothers during its trials, so the key questions, whether it passes into human milk, and whether it could affect a breastfed baby or milk supply, do not have evidence-based answers. When data is absent for a medication that is not treating an urgent condition, the cautious default most clinicians take is to avoid it while breastfeeding. What the reasoning is

The tirzepatide prescribing information does not establish safety in breastfeeding and frames it as a benefit-versus-risk judgment. A couple of points shape it. Tirzepatide is a large peptide molecule, and large peptides often pass into milk in only small amounts and may be partly broken down in an infant's gut, which is somewhat reassuring in theory. But theory is not data, and it does not tell you about effects on a newborn or on supply. There is also a separate concern: Zepbound reduces appetite and intake, and adequate nutrition matters while nursing.

Why the timing usually points to waiting

Zepbound is used for weight management, and there is rarely a medical reason it cannot wait until after weaning, which is why the usual advice is to hold off rather than take an unstudied drug while nursing. That is different from a medication treating an active condition, which is exactly why this is an individual, clinician-led decision rather than something to settle from a search result.

If you are pregnant, or conceived on it

Zepbound is also not recommended during pregnancy.
