Wegovy side effects in females: what women should know
July 26, 2026 · 2 min read

The short answer
Wegovy (semaglutide) has the same core side effects for everyone, mostly gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhea or constipation, and other gut effects that cluster around dose increases. Those are not sex-specific.
A few things matter more for women: weight loss and better insulin sensitivity can change menstrual cycles and restore ovulation (raising fertility), hair shedding from rapid weight loss is common, and Wegovy is not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
The core side effects are the same for everyone
Most of Wegovy's side effects are not sex-specific. The common ones are gastrointestinal, nausea, diarrhea or constipation, bloating, reflux, and fatigue, and they cluster in the first weeks and after each dose increase, then ease as your body adapts. Our Wegovy side effects guide covers the full profile. What follows is the smaller set of effects and considerations that matter more, or specifically, for women.
Menstrual cycle changes
Wegovy is not a hormonal drug, but the weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity it produces can indirectly change your cycle. Many women, especially those with higher weight or PCOS, find their periods become more regular as they lose weight. The stress of rapid weight loss can also make cycles temporarily irregular. Our post on GLP-1s and your period covers the mechanism.
Restored fertility and contraception
Because Wegovy can restore regular ovulation, fertility can rise, sometimes before your cycle looks obviously regular, so an unplanned pregnancy is possible. Unlike tirzepatide, semaglutide is not specifically known to reduce oral-contraceptive absorption, but because fertility can rise and Wegovy is not for use in pregnancy, reliable contraception still matters if you are not trying to conceive. Our birth control post has the detail.
Hair shedding
Hair loss is one of the effects women report most, and it is usually telogen effluvium, a temporary shedding driven by rapid weight loss rather than the drug attacking hair. It typically starts two to four months after fast loss and recovers as weight stabilizes and nutrition improves. Our Wegovy hair loss post covers what helps.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Wegovy is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, because there is not enough safety data and weight loss is not appropriate at those times. If you are planning to conceive, you would stop it beforehand under your clinician's guidance. Our Wegovy and breastfeeding post covers this.
The practical takeaway
Expect the same gut-focused side effects everyone gets, and pay extra attention to contraception (fertility can rise), cycle changes, hair shedding, and the pregnancy cautions. None of this is a reason to avoid the medication, just to go in informed and to raise anything unexpected with your clinician. Logging symptoms and cycle changes alongside your dose in DoseLog helps you and your prescriber see the pattern. This article is general information, not medical advice.

Questions people ask
Are Wegovy side effects different for women?
The core side effects (nausea, diarrhea or constipation, and other gut effects) are the same for everyone. A few things matter more for women: cycle changes, restored fertility, hair shedding, and pregnancy and breastfeeding cautions.
Does Wegovy affect your period?
It can, indirectly. Wegovy is not a hormonal drug, but the weight loss and improved insulin sensitivity it produces can make cycles more regular, especially in women with higher weight or PCOS, while the stress of rapid loss can temporarily make them irregular.
Can Wegovy affect fertility?
It can raise fertility indirectly by restoring ovulation, so unplanned pregnancy is possible even if your periods were irregular. Wegovy is not for use in pregnancy, so reliable contraception matters if pregnancy is not wanted.
Can you take Wegovy while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Wegovy is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding because of limited safety data and because weight loss is not appropriate then. If you are planning a pregnancy, stop it beforehand under your clinician's guidance.
