Does Wegovy cause hair loss? What is really going on

The short answer
Wegovy (semaglutide) is not believed to cause hair loss directly. Hair loss was reported in its trials, but at rates that track how much weight people lost, so it is understood as telogen effluvium, a temporary shedding driven by rapid weight loss and low intake.
It usually starts two to four months after fast weight loss, peaks, then recovers as weight stabilizes and nutrition improves. Enough protein, iron, and a slower pace of loss are the practical levers. Patchy or scarring loss is different and needs a clinician.
Does Wegovy cause hair loss?
Not in the way most people fear. Wegovy is not thought to poison hair follicles. Hair loss was reported in the Wegovy trials, but the pattern points at rapid weight loss as the trigger rather than the drug attacking hair, and Wegovy is very effective at producing weight loss. So the shedding is mostly a response to how fast and how much weight comes off.
What telogen effluvium actually is
The medical name for this pattern is telogen effluvium. At any time most of your hair is growing and a smaller share is resting before it sheds. A physical stressor, and losing a lot of weight quickly is a real one, can push an unusually large batch of hairs into that resting phase at once. Two to four months later they shed together, which is why the loss seems to arrive suddenly and well after you started. It shows up as more hair in the brush and a thinner ponytail, spread evenly across the scalp rather than in bald patches.
What actually helps
Feed the recovery rather than chasing products. Hit your protein target every day, because protein is the raw material for hair, and do not let intake collapse just because appetite has. Ask your clinician to check ferritin (iron stores), vitamin D, and thyroid, since low iron in particular worsens shedding and is common and fixable. The reassuring part, and when it is not
Telogen effluvium is temporary. Once weight stabilizes and nutrition is solid, the follicles restart and hair regrows over several months, though it can lag the rest of your progress. What is not telogen effluvium: bald patches, a receding line, scaling or itching, or scarring. Those point to something else and deserve a clinician rather than a wait-and-see.
