Wegovy and bloating: why it happens and how to ease it

The short answer

Bloating is common on Wegovy (semaglutide) because the drug slows digestion, so food lingers, ferments, and produces gas, and the slowed gut also promotes constipation, which adds to the bloated feeling. It is worst early and after dose increases.

Smaller, lower-fat meals, treating constipation and gas, eating slowly, and gentle movement after meals reduce it. Severe pain, a hard swollen belly with nothing passing, or vomiting is different and needs prompt care.

Why does Wegovy cause bloating?

Bloating on Wegovy traces back to how semaglutide works: it slows the stomach and gut. Food moves through more slowly, and while it lingers it ferments more, producing gas, and the slowed transit also promotes constipation, which itself causes a full, bloated feeling. So bloating on Wegovy is a direct knock-on of the drug's main action rather than a sign something is wrong, and it is shared across the GLP-1 class. It concentrates in the first weeks and the days after each dose increase, then usually eases as your body adapts.

What eases it

  • Smaller, lower-fat meals. A slowed stomach clears small, lighter meals faster, so food ferments less. Large and very fatty meals are the biggest triggers.
  • Treat constipation, which is a major cause of bloating. Fiber, fluids, movement, and, if needed, a pharmacist-recommended option help. Our Wegovy constipation post covers this.
  • Ease gas-prone foods during flares: beans, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage), fizzy drinks, and sugar alcohols (sorbitol, xylitol).
  • Eat slowly and walk after meals. Ten to fifteen minutes helps the stomach empty and moves gas along, and eating slowly reduces swallowed air.
  • Ask a pharmacist about simethicone for trapped gas if the basics are not enough.

Our general GLP-1 bloating post and Wegovy sulfur burps post cover related symptoms.

How long does it last?

For most people bloating is worst in the first weeks and after each dose increase, then eases as the body adapts, especially once constipation and gas are controlled. If a particular dose keeps causing significant bloating, your prescriber can slow the titration.

When to get it checked

Ordinary bloating is uncomfortable but harmless. Treat it as urgent if it comes with severe or persistent abdominal pain, a hard swollen belly with no gas or bowel movement passing at all (a possible blockage), or repeated vomiting. Those need same-day care rather than a diet tweak. Logging bloating next to your dose days and meals in DoseLog shows whether it tracks your titration or specific foods. Questions people ask

Why does Wegovy cause bloating?

Wegovy (semaglutide) slows digestion, so food lingers, ferments, and produces gas, and the slowed gut also promotes constipation, which adds to the bloated feeling. It is a common, expected effect of how the drug works, worst early and after dose increases.

How do I relieve bloating on Wegovy?

Eat smaller, lower-fat meals, treat any constipation with fiber, fluids, and movement, ease gas-prone foods during flares, eat slowly, and walk after meals. A pharmacist can suggest simethicone for trapped gas.

How long does Wegovy bloating last?

It is usually worst in the first weeks and after each dose increase, then eases as the body adapts, especially once constipation and gas are controlled. Significant bloating that keeps returning at a given dose is worth raising with your prescriber.

When is bloating on Wegovy serious?

Seek same-day care if it comes with severe or persistent abdominal pain, a hard swollen belly with no gas or stool passing at all (a possible blockage), or repeated vomiting. Ordinary bloating is uncomfortable but harmless.
