Wegovy and constipation: why it happens and how to relieve it
July 23, 2026 · 2 min read

The short answer
Constipation is among the most commonly reported Wegovy (semaglutide) side effects. It comes from the slowed gut transit the drug causes, combined with eating less food and fiber and drinking less as appetite falls.
More fiber and fluids, daily movement, and, when needed, a pharmacist-recommended gentle laxative usually relieve it. Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or no bowel movement with a bloated, hard belly are different and need prompt care.
Why does Wegovy cause constipation?
Wegovy is semaglutide, and slowing the gut is part of how it works: food moves through the stomach and intestine more slowly, which helps you feel full for longer but also means stool sits longer and dries out. On top of that, appetite suppression usually means you eat less food and less fiber, and drink less, all of which make stool harder to pass. So constipation on Wegovy is really the drug's gut effect plus lower intake acting together. It is common, usually manageable, and tends to be worse early and after dose increases.
How to relieve it
- Fluids first. Drink steadily through the day. Even mild dehydration hardens stool, and it is easy to under-drink when appetite is low.
- Fiber, but gradually. Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, and ground flax or chia help. Increase fiber slowly and with water, since a lot of fiber without enough fluid can worsen things.
- Move daily. A regular walk stimulates the bowel; a mostly sedentary day slows it.
- Do not ignore the urge, and give yourself an unhurried few minutes, often after a meal when the gut is most active.
- Ask a pharmacist about a gentle option. An osmotic laxative or a fiber supplement is commonly suitable; they can match it to you. Our post on laxatives for GLP-1 constipation covers the choices.

How long does it last?
For most people constipation is worst in the first weeks and after each dose increase, then eases as the body adapts, provided fiber, fluids, and movement are in place. If it keeps returning at a particular dose, mention it to your prescriber, who can advise on titration or a regular stool softener.
When to get it checked
Constipation is usually a nuisance, not a danger, but treat it as urgent if you have severe or worsening abdominal pain, a hard swollen belly with no gas or stool passing at all, or vomiting, which can signal a blockage and needs same-day care. Blood in the stool or constipation alternating with significant diarrhea also deserves a clinician. Logging bowel movements next to your dose days and fiber in DoseLog shows whether it tracks your titration.

Questions people ask
Why does Wegovy cause constipation?
Wegovy (semaglutide) slows gut transit, so stool sits longer and dries out. Appetite suppression also means eating less food and fiber and drinking less, which compounds it. The result is one of the most common Wegovy side effects, worse early and after dose increases.
How do I relieve constipation on Wegovy?
Drink steadily through the day, increase fiber gradually with water, move daily, and do not ignore the urge. If that is not enough, ask a pharmacist about a gentle osmotic laxative or fiber supplement matched to you.
How long does Wegovy constipation last?
It is usually worst in the first weeks and after each dose increase, then eases as the body adapts, provided fiber, fluids, and movement are in place. Persistent constipation at a given dose is worth raising with your prescriber.
When is constipation on Wegovy serious?
Seek same-day care for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a hard swollen belly with no gas or stool passing, or vomiting, which can signal a blockage. Blood in the stool also needs a clinician. Otherwise constipation is usually a manageable nuisance.
