Not losing weight on Wegovy? Common reasons and what to check
July 26, 2026 · 2 min read

The short answer
Not losing on Wegovy is usually explained by being early on a low dose, a normal plateau as the body adapts, undereating protein or overeating hidden calories, low activity, poor sleep, or expecting the scale to move faster than it does.
Most causes are fixable without abandoning the medication. Give each dose time, protect protein and muscle, track intake honestly, and take non-scale progress into account. Persistent stalls on a stable higher dose are worth reviewing with your prescriber.
First, is it actually a stall?
Weight loss is not linear. Water shifts, hormones, salt, and the menstrual cycle can hide fat loss for a week or two even when things are working. Before troubleshooting, look at the four-week trend rather than day-to-day numbers, and weigh under consistent conditions. A flat fortnight inside a downward trend is normal, not a failure.
The common reasons
- You are still on a starting or low dose. Wegovy is titrated up over about four to five months. The lower doses are mainly about tolerance, and appetite suppression strengthens as you climb toward 2.4 mg, so early plateaus often resolve at the next step-up. Our Wegovy dosing schedule shows the ladder.
- You have hit a normal plateau. As you lose weight, your body needs fewer calories, so the same intake that drove loss can become maintenance. Plateaus are expected and usually break with an adjustment to intake, activity, or dose.
- Not enough protein, too much of everything else. Under-eating protein costs muscle, which lowers metabolism, while liquid calories, snacking during the appetite-quiet window, and larger portions than you think can quietly offset the deficit.
- Too little movement, especially resistance training, which preserves the muscle that keeps metabolism higher.
- Sleep and stress, both of which raise appetite hormones and blunt progress.
What to do about it
Give each dose a fair run, since the answer is often simply the next titration step. Track what you actually eat for a week (honestly, including drinks and tastes) and make sure protein is high. Add or increase resistance training. Protect sleep. And weigh your progress in more than pounds: measurements, how clothes fit, energy, and blood markers all count. Our general GLP-1 stall post and Wegovy food guide go deeper.
When to talk to your prescriber
If you are on a stable higher dose, eating and training well, sleeping enough, and still truly flat over a couple of months, it is worth a review. Your clinician can look at whether the dose should move, whether another condition (like thyroid) is involved, or whether a different approach fits. Logging dose, weight, and intake together in DoseLog gives them the real pattern. This article is general information, not medical advice.

Questions people ask
Why am I not losing weight on Wegovy?
The usual reasons are still being on a low starting dose, a normal plateau as your body adapts, undereating protein or overeating hidden calories, too little activity, and poor sleep. Most are fixable without stopping the medication.
Why did Wegovy stop working?
Often it is a normal plateau: as you lose weight your body needs fewer calories, so a former deficit becomes maintenance. It can also mean you are due a dose step-up, or that intake, activity, or sleep have drifted. Review the four-week trend before concluding it failed.
Is it normal to plateau on Wegovy?
Yes. Weight loss is not linear, and plateaus are expected as the body adapts. They usually break with an adjustment to intake, activity, protein, or the next dose. Look at four-week trends rather than daily numbers.
What should I do if Wegovy isn't working?
Give each dose time, track intake honestly with high protein, add resistance training, protect sleep, and measure non-scale progress. If you are on a stable higher dose with a good routine and still flat for months, review it with your prescriber.
