Is GLP-1 the same as Ozempic? Untangling the names

The short answer

No. Ozempic is a GLP-1, but GLP-1 is not Ozempic, in the same way a Labrador is a dog but "dog" is not a Labrador. The confusion is understandable, because Ozempic became famous enough to stand in for the whole category in everyday conversation.

So where does Ozempic sit?

Ozempic is a brand name. The active drug inside it is semaglutide, which is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes. The same semaglutide is sold as Wegovy for weight management and as Rybelsus in pill form for diabetes. Same molecule, three brands, different labels and doses. The wrinkle: not every "GLP-1" is only a GLP-1

People use "GLP-1" loosely to cover the whole modern weight and diabetes drug category, but some of those drugs do more than GLP-1. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) is a dual agonist: it targets GLP-1 and a second hormone, GIP. Investigational drugs go further still, like retatrutide, which targets three receptors. They get grouped under the everyday label "GLP-1s," which is convenient but not strictly accurate.

Why the distinction matters

Mostly because it changes what you can ask for and what applies to you. "Is Ozempic covered?" and "is a GLP-1 covered?" are different questions to an insurer. A side effect described for the class usually applies to your drug; a figure quoted for one brand may come from a different dose or a different molecule.
