How long until a GLP-1 suppresses appetite?

The short answer

Most people notice some appetite suppression within the first few days to two weeks of starting a GLP-1 (tirzepatide, semaglutide, or liraglutide), often before any weight change. It usually deepens with each dose increase.

The starter dose produces a partial effect on purpose; the fuller appetite and food-noise reduction tends to arrive at therapeutic doses. Timing varies by person, drug, and how fast you titrate.

The short answer

Appetite suppression is usually the first effect people feel, and it often shows up fast: many notice smaller portions filling them up and less snacking within the first few days to two weeks, well before the scale moves. But "noticing it" and "full effect" are different. The starter dose gives a partial effect by design, and the suppression typically deepens with each step up the dose ladder.

Roughly what to expect

TimeframeWhat people commonly notice
Days 1 to 7First signs for many: smaller meals satisfy, some drop in cravings
Weeks 1 to 4 (starter dose)A real but partial effect; the starter dose is not the full dose
After each dose increaseA further step down in appetite and food noise, often within days of the higher dose
At a therapeutic doseThe fuller, steadier suppression most people are aiming for

So if week one feels underwhelming, that is expected: you are on the lowest dose. The effect is built to grow as you climb.

Why it varies so much

  • Which drug. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) and semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) both suppress appetite strongly; individuals respond differently to each, and non-response to one does not predict the other.
  • Your dose and how fast you climb. The suppression tracks the dose, so a slow titration means a slower build. That is a fair trade for fewer side effects.
  • Where you start. People with strong baseline "food noise" often notice the change most dramatically; others feel it as a quieter, subtler shift.
  • Individual biology. Metabolism, other medications, and habits all shift the timing.

What "food noise going quiet" feels like

Beyond eating less, many people describe the mental change as the bigger one: the constant background pull toward food fading. Meals become fuel rather than a preoccupation, and it gets easier to stop when full. That mental quieting often arrives alongside the physical fullness. Our food noise guide covers it in depth.

If appetite does not drop at all

Give it the titration. Very little effect at the starter dose is common and not a sign it has failed, since the effective doses are ahead of you. If you have reached a therapeutic dose and still notice no change in appetite, that is worth discussing with your prescriber, since a dose adjustment or a different drug in the class may fit better. Our not-losing-weight post covers the related situation. Logging your hunger next to your dose in DoseLog shows exactly when and how much it shifts.

Questions people ask

How long does it take for tirzepatide to suppress appetite?

Many people notice reduced appetite within the first few days to two weeks on tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), often before any weight change. The effect is partial at the starter dose and typically deepens with each dose increase, reaching its fuller form at therapeutic doses.

How long until semaglutide suppresses appetite?

Similar to tirzepatide: appetite change is often the first thing people feel on semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), sometimes within days, and it builds as the dose climbs. Timing varies by person and how quickly you titrate.

Why don't I feel appetite suppression in the first week?

Because you are on the starter dose, which gives a deliberately partial effect so your gut can adapt. That is normal and not a sign it is failing. The fuller suppression usually arrives at the higher, therapeutic doses later in titration.

What if a GLP-1 never suppresses my appetite?

Little effect at the starter dose is common. If you reach a therapeutic dose and still notice no change, discuss it with your prescriber, since a dose adjustment or a different drug in the class may suit you better. Individual response varies widely.
