Mounjaro sulfur burps: why they happen and how to stop them
July 15, 2026 · 2 min read

The short answer
Sulfur (rotten-egg) burps on Mounjaro come from tirzepatide's slowed stomach: food lingers longer and ferments, producing hydrogen sulfide gas that comes back up. They are common and usually harmless.
Smaller, lower-fat meals, easing sulfur-rich and gas-prone foods, and gentle movement after eating reduce them. They cluster during dose increases and ease with adaptation. Severe pain or vomiting is a different, urgent story.
Why does Mounjaro cause sulfur burps?
The rotten-egg smell is hydrogen sulfide gas, and the reason it shows up on Mounjaro is tirzepatide's defining action: a slowed stomach. Food sits longer than it should, and while it lingers it ferments more, and certain foods (especially protein-rich and sulfur-containing ones) produce sulfur gases as they break down. Those gases come back up as burps with the characteristic egg smell. It is the same mechanism whether the tirzepatide is branded Mounjaro or Zepbound, and it is shared across the GLP-1 class.
Like the other gut effects, sulfur burps concentrate in the first weeks and the days after a dose increase, then usually ease as your body adapts to each dose.
What eases them
- Smaller, lower-fat meals. A slowed stomach clears small, lighter meals faster, so food ferments less. Large and very fatty meals are the biggest triggers.
- Ease the sulfur-rich foods during flares. Eggs, red meat, garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage) all feed sulfur gas production. You do not have to cut them forever, just dial them back while it is bad.
- Move after eating. A 10 to 15 minute walk helps the stomach empty, giving food less time to ferment.
- Eat slowly and calmly, which reduces swallowed air adding to the burping.
- Ask a pharmacist about simethicone, which can help trapped gas, if the basics are not enough.
Our GLP-1 sulfur burps post has the full stack, and since burps and bad breath share the same cause, the GLP-1 breath post overlaps.
How long do sulfur burps last with Mounjaro?
For most people they ease within days to a couple of weeks as the body adapts to a given dose, and they tend to flare again briefly after each dose increase before settling. If they persist well beyond the adjustment period, or a particular dose keeps triggering them, that is worth raising with your prescriber, who can slow the titration.
When burps are a red flag
Ordinary sulfur burps are unpleasant but harmless. Treat it as urgent when it is different: sulfur burps with severe or persistent abdominal pain (especially radiating to the back, which is pancreatitis territory), repeated vomiting, a hard swollen belly with no gas or bowel movement passing (possible obstruction), or signs of dehydration. Those need same-day care, not a diet tweak. Logging burps next to your meals and dose days in DoseLog quickly shows whether they track specific foods or your titration.

Questions people ask
Why does Mounjaro cause sulfur burps?
Tirzepatide slows the stomach, so food sits longer and ferments, and sulfur-containing foods produce hydrogen sulfide gas (the rotten-egg smell) that comes back up as burps. It is common, shared across the GLP-1 class, and usually harmless.
How do I stop sulfur burps on Mounjaro?
Smaller, lower-fat meals, easing sulfur-rich and gas-prone foods (eggs, red meat, garlic, onions, cruciferous vegetables) during flares, a walk after eating, and eating slowly. A pharmacist can suggest simethicone for trapped gas.
How long do sulfur burps last with Mounjaro?
Usually days to a couple of weeks as the body adapts to a dose, with brief flares after each dose increase. If they persist well beyond adjustment or a dose keeps triggering them, your prescriber can slow the titration.
When are sulfur burps on tirzepatide serious?
Seek same-day care if they come with severe or persistent abdominal pain (especially radiating to the back), repeated vomiting, a hard swollen belly with no gas or bowel movement passing, or signs of dehydration. Ordinary sulfur burps are harmless.
