Does your GLP-1 need to be refrigerated? Storage rules by brand

The short answer

Yes, store your GLP-1 in the refrigerator, but you do not have to keep it cold every minute. Every major injectable GLP-1 is designed to be refrigerated before first use and to tolerate room temperature for a defined window, which is exactly what makes a weekly injection livable: you can carry it, travel with it, and leave it out for the few minutes it takes to inject. The one hard rule across all of them is never freeze it. A frozen pen is ruined even after it thaws.

The general rule that applies to all of them

• Before first use: keep it in the fridge, roughly 36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 8 Celsius), in the original carton to protect it from light.
• Room temperature is allowed for a set window: each brand permits storage below about 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 Celsius) for a certain number of days, either from first use or as a one-time out-of-fridge period.
• Never freeze it, and do not use a pen that has been frozen, left in extreme heat, or left out longer than its label allows.
• Injecting cold can sting more, so many people let the dose reach room temperature for a few minutes first, which is fine within the allowed window.

Brand by brand (general guidance)

• Ozempic (semaglutide): refrigerate before first use; after first use the pen can be kept at room temperature or in the fridge for a number of weeks (commonly cited as up to about 56 days).
• Wegovy (semaglutide): single-dose pens kept refrigerated; they can sit at room temperature for a limited period (commonly cited as up to about 28 days) before use, protected from light.
• Mounjaro and Zepbound (tirzepatide): refrigerate; can be kept at room temperature for a shorter window (commonly cited as up to about 21 days). Use promptly once out.
• Saxenda (liraglutide): refrigerate before first use; after first use, room temperature or fridge for a set period (commonly cited as about 30 days).
• Rybelsus (oral semaglutide): the pill is stored at room temperature, not refrigerated, in its original blister.

These figures are the general, commonly-cited windows, but manufacturers update labels and the exact days and temperature limits are what matter. Always confirm against your specific pen's instructions or ask your pharmacist, especially before relying on a long out-of-fridge period.

Traveling with your pen

The room-temperature window is what makes travel work: a day trip needs no cooling at all, and longer trips are covered by a small insulated bag or a medical travel case with a cold pack (kept from directly freezing the pen). When a pen might be spoiled

Do not use a pen that has been frozen, exposed to high heat (a hot car, direct sun), or left out past its allowed window. If the liquid looks cloudy, discolored, or has particles when it should be clear, do not use it and ask your pharmacist. When in doubt, a replacement is safer than an uncertain dose.
